Founder of Gleason Works of Rochester, USA

Born in Ireland c.1836. Emigrated to the USA in 1851. Learned the trade of machinist in the Rochester, NY shop of Asa Smith. Worked at Colt's Armorory during the Civil War. Returned to Rochester in 1865 to start his own works. Developed a bevel gear planing machine in 1873. Latterly he transferred control to his son James E. Gleason and daughter Kate Gleason. He died at his home in Rochester on 21 May 1922, aged 86.[1]
