c.1698 John Hadley surveyed the River Aire in preparation for the Aire and Calder Navigation

c.1704 Working with George Sorocold, John Hadley invented a method of constructing a water wheel so that it could be raised and lowered with the height of the river[1]

1726 John Hadley (presumably the same person as he had a background in surveying?) was the inventor of the nautical sextant or quadrant, which continued in use until 1876 and afterwards. Also thought to have been the maker of a Gregorian reflector telescope.[2]
