Sir GEORGE THOMAS BUCKHAM, who was chief ordnance designer and deputy chairman of the Sheffield Board of Messrs. Vickers, Armstrongs, had been described as the greatest gunnery expert in the country.
He was born at Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1863 and in 1879 was apprenticed at the Elswick Works of Sir W. G. Armstrong, Mitchell and Company, taking also a course of technical education at the Elswick Mechanics' Institute. After spending a number of years in the reconstituted firm of Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth and Company as draughtsman, he left Newcastle in 1895 to become chief of the ordnance designing staff of Messrs. Vickers, Sons and Maxim.
Sir George Beckham was largely responsible for the great development in armaments which has taken place during recent years and received his knighthood in 1917 as a reward for his services.
His death occurred on 9th May 1928, and he had been a Member of the Institution since 1901.
