HMS Druid
A wooden corvette mounting ten guns, of 1322 tons burden, fitted with engines of 300 horsepower by Maudslay, Sons and Field .
1869 Launched at the Royal Dockyard, Deptford, the last vessel built there. She wndertook the measured mile on Maplin Sands with a view to testing the relative merits of the Griffith screw, and the Lowe-Vansittart propeller.
The sea was smooth and the wind moderate. Six runs were made at full boiler power, at an average speed of 12.98 knots; at half boiler power she made 11.20 knots. However, during the full power runs the ship shook as though she would fall to pieces
With the completion of the measured mile trips, the ship was put under easy steam, and headed for port in a fog. In about half an hour she went aground. She was anchored and waited for the Otter steam tug; the Druid got back late in the evening to Sheerness.
