Walter Paul Frederick Fanghanel, B.Sc. (Eng.) (Lond.), was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1907, transferred to Associate Member in 1917, and to Member in 1935. He served at one time as Chairman of the London Graduates' Section, and from 1924 to 1928 as a Member of Council. He was also an Associate Member of both the Institutions of Civil and Electrical Engineers.
In 1940 he presented the Award 'Engineering applied to Agriculture', to the Institution, in memory of his son, Paul Robert Fanghanel.
He gained his education at St. Paul's School and Sheffield University, and graduated B.Sc. in Engineering. He served an apprenticeship of five years in the locomotive works, Midland Railway, London and Derby, under Sir Henry Fowler.
Subsequently, he joined the staff of the Chief Mechanical Engineer at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, and later was Works Manager in the Mechanical Engineering Department from 1914 to 1922, when he resigned.
The following year he became a Director of P. Fanghanel and Co., Ltd., Fenchurch Street, London; in 1926 he was appointed Managing Director, and eventually Chairman.
His death occurred in his sixty-seventh year on 15th November 1955.
