1956 Died. 'The death has occurred of Mr. Charles Rupert Clay, chairman of Charles Clay and Sons Ltd., which has a factory the West Chirton Trading Estate, North Shields. He was 82. Mr Clay first visited North Shields in 1943 when the firm found difficulty in obtaining labour in Luton, their headquarters, because of the war. After seeing the trading estate, be decided to build a factory there. The factory, opened in 1944, made flying helmets. After the war, production was switched to light clothing, and children’s wearing apparel. Mr. Clay regularly visited the factory, which today employs mere than 800 people. The cremation at Golders Green, will be attended by Mr. Benning, general manager of the North Shields factory.'[1]
