King Edward VI Grammar School, Birmingham, was articled to Henry Hack, Chief Engineer of Birmingham Corporation Gas Department. For seventeen years Works Manager of the Saltley Gas Works of the Birmingham Corporation, then appointed in 1899 Chief Engineer of the Sheffield Gas Co, which position held till retired in June, 1918. Past President of the Manchester Institution of Gas Engineers. Chief Works: Remodelled the three Sheffield Gas Works and built an 8,000,000 cubic feet gasholder and tank at a cost of 54,00c, was able to produce coal gas at a cost of tenpence per i,000 cubic feet for manufacturing purposes, and fifteen pence for ordinary consumption, being the second lowest price in the Kingdom. Member of the Totnes Club. War Services.—Was engaged largely in the production of toluene for the manufacture of T.N.T. for the Government.
