Jean-Baptiste Vifquain
Jean-Baptiste Vifquain (1789-1854)
He received his engineering training at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. He is credited with designing the first suspension bridge in Belgium, in the gardens of Viscount Vilain XIIII's castle of Wissekerke in Kruibeke in 1824. This footbridge still exists with its original suspension. Its span between pylons is 23.1 metres. [1]
