Jean-Baptiste Vifquain
Jean-Baptiste Vifquain (1789-1854)
He received his engineering training at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. He is credited with designing the first suspension bridge in what is now Belgium*, in the gardens of Viscount Vilain XIIII's castle of Wissekerke in Kruibeke in 1824. This footbridge still exists with its original suspension. Its span between pylons is 23.1 metres. [1]
