Eric Mensforth
Sir Eric Mensforth, C.B.E., D.L., F.Eng
- Son of Holberry (later Sir Holberry) Mensforth
- Eric Mensforth wrote an excellent book, 'Family Engineers', which looks at episodes in his own life and that of his father, and of other relations. It also gives a wide-ranging account of the activities of many other engineers and politicians, as well as notable engineering companies of the 20th century. The emphasis is on John Brown and Co[1]. The following biographical information is taken from that book.
- He graduated from Cambridge and served a Graduate Apprenticeship at Mather and Platt, initially in their foundry at Salford Iron Works. He then became technical assistant to the general manager at Bolckow Vaughan. He was seconded for a period to work at Klockner-Werke at their Mannstaedt Works.
- In 1933 he joined English Electric and became Assistant Manager at their Bradford Works.
- In 1937 he became General Manager and local director of Markham and Co.
- In 1938 he went to Westland in Yeovil as joint Managing Director. During the war he also joined the Ministry of Aircraft Production on a part-time basis.
