Willard Sawyer

Willard Sawyer of Dover was an early pioneer of human-powered vehicles, the forerunner of the bicycle. In the 1840s he began to produce four-wheeled vehicles wher the rider powered the rear wheels by moving foot treadles back and forth.
In 1851 he rode one to the 1851 Great Exhibition. Later he sent a model to New York.
He published a catalogue in 1863 that showed models carrying up to six people. A sample is in the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa
