Metallurgical Laboratory, of Middlesbrough

At the age of twenty-five John Edward Stead entered into partnership with his first employer, John Pattinson to establish the laboratory.

1905 when Pattinson retired, Mr. H. Frankland, F.I.C., joined Mr. Stead, the name of the firm, Pattinson and Stead, being retained.

The metallurgical laboratory attained a worldwide reputation
