Sanctioned in 1845 The Wakefield, Pontefract and Goole Railway covered the towns named, and under powers given the following year a branch from Knottingley to Askern and one from Pontefract to Methley were built. These branches were to be part of the Great Northern Railway route to York and to Leeds (Midland) respectively. The Goole line was opened on April 1st 1848: the Askern branch on June 6th, 1848, and the Methley branch on October 1st 1849.[1]
