The Mazeppa was a locomotive, originally built as a "grasshopper" and converted to a "crab" in 1837. The cylinders were changed from the vertical to horizontal, the walking beams and connecting-roads being removed. The cylinders were placed by Ross Winans at the rear end of the frame suggesting the motion of a crab, which was in contradiction of the name "Mazeppa". This engine has a record of over fifty years' service.
