"JOHN FREDERICK WARD TAMPLIN, R.N., ret., who died in the Royal Naval Hospital, Haslar, on 13th January 1951 at the age of fifty-five, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1946.
He was educated at Bedford School and in 1913 entered the Royal Navy as one of the first public school cadets. He then served as a watch-keeping officer in several of H.M. Ships before going in 1921 to Keyham College; after which he became senior engineer in HMS Courageous. Subsequently he was second in command or in charge of the engine room department in several of H.M. Ships, including destroyers, cruisers, battleships, and fleet aircraft carriers. For a period he was on the staff of the Rear-Admiral on the China station and later was squadron engineer officer of an aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean.
He had also been engineer officer in charge during the reconstruction and building of various ships, including HMS Queen Elisabeth and HMS Ajax. His last appointment before retirement was as president of the temporary engineer officer Selection Board and he was in charge of engineer officers' courses."
