GEORGE BEARD died on April 20, 1913, at his residence in Glasgow.
He was a director of the firm of Smith & M‘Lean, Limited, iron and steel manufacturers of Gartcosh.
He went to Scotland thirty-one years ago to manage the sheet-rolling mills at Gartcosh, and the works prospered under his guidance. He was an authority on questions affecting the manufactured iron trade of the district, and took a prominent part in the formation of the West of Scotland Iron and Steel Institute, of which he was at one time president. In the founding of the Scottish Manufactured Iron Trade Conciliation and Arbitration Board he also took an active part.
Previous to going to Scotland, he was principal partner in the firm of Ambrose Beard & Sons, Regent Ironworks, Bilston, and later of George Beard & E. H. Eberhard, Regent Grove Ironworks, Birmingham.
He was elected a member of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1886.
