John Flavell Coales (1907-1999) of Elliott Brothers

1907 Born at Harborne, Birmingam

Educated at Berkhamstead School

Went to Sydney Sussex College, Cambridge, and read mathematics and physics and in 1928 awarded of a degree in Natural Sciences.

1928-1939 Worked for the Admiralty at H. M. Signal School, Portsmouth working on radio direction finding.

WWII Led the Admiralty’s radar research effort[1]

1946 First Director of the research laboratories of Elliot Brothers at Borehamwood.

1953 Return to Cambridge University

1971 Professor John Flavell Coales CBE FEng FRS appointed president of the Institution of Electrical Engineers

1999 Died
