JAMES BALDWIN was born at Keighley on 9th April 1839.
He was apprenticed to Mr. James Wardman, of the Airedale Boiler Works, Bingley, in 1852, and served eight years with him.
On its termination he entered into partnership with Mr. Amos Smith, under the title of Amos Smith and Co., boiler makers, Keighley.
This terminated in 1862, when he became manager of the boiler works of Messrs. House and Priestley, of Bradford; and in the following year he acted in the same capacity for Messrs. Holdsworth and Sons, of Bradford.
After eighteen months he undertook the managership of Mr. Wardman's Works, where he had served his apprenticeship, and in 1870 started in business on his own account as a boiler maker in Keighley.
Indifferent health caused his abandonment of this class of work in 1875, and he founded the Devonshire Brass Works, Keighley, under the name of Messrs. James Baldwin and Co.
He continued as head of the firm until his death, which took place at Keighley on 17th November 1907, in his sixty-ninth year.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1903.
