William Marriner Whitley was born in 1914 and received his technical education at Loughborough College.

In 1937 he became Technical Assistant to S. Flavel and Co., Ltd., leaving them in 1939 to become Assistant Foundry Manager at New Garter Foundry, Ltd., Tipton.

He was reported missing in July, 1944, while serving in the Royal Navy. He was 30.

He was elected a Graduate in 1939.
