William Armstrong (1778-1857)
Corn merchant and local politician, of Tyneside
1778 Born in Wreay, 4 miles south-east of Carlisle.
1790s He moved to Newcastle to join Losh, Lubbren and Co., corn merchants, as a clerk. George Losh (1766–1846), the senior partner in the firm, was also born in Cumberland - the 2 families may have known each other.
c.1801 Armstrong married Ann Potter
He eventually succeeded to ownership of the firm, in or after 1803. The firm subsequently traded as Armstrong and Co., corn merchants, of Cowgate, Newcastle.
1802 Birth of daughter, Ann
1810 Birth of son, William George Armstrong
1835 Gained a place on Newcastle town council
1843 Became chairman of the River Committee
1850 Became mayor of Newcastle
1857 Died
