The Bristol Type 171 Sycamore was the first helicopter to be granted a British civil certificate of airworthiness. It was developed by a team at the Bristol Aeroplane Co led by Austrian-born Raoul Hafner.
The first prototype flew in 1947 and the first aircraft entered service for military and civilian tasks by the early 1950s.
