George Chatterton (1816-1908)
1816 Born in Sheffield, England. He came from a long line of file makers, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, having been in the same business in England.
Served his apprenticeship with W. and S. Butcher of Sheffield.
Emigrated to America in 1839, settling in Providence, RI, where gradually established the file industry in Providence. He was joined in the business by his son, Charles O. Chatterton (son of George and Phoebe (Mason) Chatterton, born in Providence, 5 April 1848). George's brother, James Chatterton, joined the business from England in 1843.
At various times at various times George was director of the Liberty Bank, president of the Hope Iron Foundry, and treasurer of Rhode Island Manufacturing Company.
