Richard Edmund Cornforth Bolton (1872- )

1922 Engineer Captain R.I.M., D.S.O., O.B.E., The 'Cedars, 84, Wells Road, Bath; b. 1872 at Calcutta; s. of Alexander J. Bolton, M.Inst.C.E. Ed. at St. John's College, Luton. Served apprenticeship with John and James Thompson, Engineers, of Paisley, and Bow and McLaughlin, Engineers, of Glasgow. 1893— Appointed Assistant Engineer by Secretary of State for India to the Royal Indian Marine, and as such posted to various ships of the Marine. 1903-Appointed Engineer, Yard Craft Viceroy's Yacht Establishment, and Engineer of the Factory, Kidderpore Dockyard, Calcutta. 1911—Took charge of the Royal Indian Marine "Dalhousie " as Chief Engineer. 1914—On breaking out of war his services were transferred to British East Africa, to take charge of workshops at Killindini under Admiralty instructions. After occupation of the German East Coast by the British, directed to open out workshops as required at Coastal Ports, and on the occupation of Dares Salaam, appointed Engineer of the late Imperial German Dockyard, which had been seriously damaged by the Germans before leaving for the interior. The machinery and plant was put into working order and made efficient by the termination of the war. Now returning to Calcutta as Inspector of Machinery, Royal Indian Marine Dockyard and President of the Board of Examiners for Engineers' Certificates. Awarded the D.S.O. and O.B.E. for services rendered.
