He was the nephew of Thomas Powell (1802-1864), founder of the firm Thomas and T. Powell, and cousin of Thomas Powell (Son), who was already a member of I Mech E by 1874, who was older than this Thomas.
At some point he joined the family firm

By 1880 he had moved from France to Neath.
