William Henry Hornby (c1805-1884) of William Henry Hornby and Co and first Mayor of Blackburn

Born the third son of John Hornby of Raikes hall who with John Birley founded Brockhouse Mill, Blackburn

1851 Married to Susannah Birley and had seven sons and four daughters

1884 Died. 'The death is reported of Mr. William Henry Hornby, Poole Hall, Cheshire, the head of the important firm of Blackburn cotton manufacturers. Deceased was member for Blackburn from 1857 to 1869, and was then unseated on petition and succeeded by one of his sons. He became the first Mayor of Blackburn on the incorporation of the borough in 1851. He retired into private life many years ago. He was seventy-nine years of age. The best-known of his sons is Mr. A. N. Hornby, the famous cricketer and football player, and another son is chairman of the Executive of the Blackburn Conservatives.'[1]
