Granton Pier
Granton Harbour lies on the Firth of Forth, about a mile to the west of Newhaven and 2.5 miles to the north of the centre of Edinburgh. It was constructed to accommodate shipping too large for the small harbour at Newhaven
1835 November. Work commenced of building the pier.
1838 Harbour opened although work continued on additions until 1863
1847 '...The sea wall and other works now being made at Granton in conjunction with the Edinburgh and Northern Railway Company, and required for the better connection of the railway with Granton Pier, and which are under contract with Messrs John Orrell and Co., are in progress, and will be completed by the time the Duke of Buceleuch has finished the laying down of the rails on Granton Pier, with which it is to be connected...'[1]
