Sir John Edward Cohen (born Jacob Kohen) - Jack Cohen (1898-1979) founder of Tesco

1898 October 06th. Born at Commercial Road, Spitalfields, the son of Avroam Kohen, a Polish immigrant who worked as a ladies tailor, and his wife Sime Zaremba

Educated at Rutland Street School until he was aged 14

Apprenticed tailor to his father

1924 Married Sarah (Cissie) Fox, daughter of an immigrant Russian-Jewish tailor and had two daughters

1937 July Changed his name by deed poll from Jacob Kohen to John Edward Cohen

1979 Died at the age of 80 in Westminster and is buried at Willesden Jewish Cemetery.
