1953 The Association was founded to provide research and advice on drinking water treatment to the municipal bodies responsible for drinking water supply; it was based at Medmenham, Buckinghamshire.

1974 Merged with the Water Pollution Research Laboratory and the Water Resources Board to form a quango, the Water Research Centre, controlled by the publicly-owned regional water authorities. The centre conducted research into the treatment of sewage and trade effluents, the causes and prevention of pollution in rivers, and the purification of natural waters for the nation's water supplies.
