Joseph Smethurst (c1842-1908) of the Great Grimsby Gas Co

1908 Died. 'The death took place quite unexpectedly, Saturday afternoon, Mr Joseph Smethurst. J.P., of Acres. Although unwell for some; time, his condition had not given cause for grave anxiety was in his garden during the morning, and even went out for a brief walk. After dinner sudden seizure took place, and, despite the prompt efforts of Drs Stephenson and Duncan rally him, he succumbed to heart failure, at the age of 64 years. Although several times invited, refused to take much part in public life but was identified in many instances with local commercial affairs, and was best known to the general public as chairman of the Great Grimsby Gas Co.'[1]
