1894 Cardiff Corporation commissioned a new power station at Canton Common to supply electric lighting in the city. The previous private scheme had ended some time previously

W. H. Massey, of Queen Anne's Gate, London, and Twyford, was consulting engineer, represented in Cardiff, throughout the progress of the work, by Mr. R. H. Fletcher.
