Truswell's Brewery Co
1836 Trusswell [sic] and Walker, Eyre Street Brewery.[1] This is the first mention found of the firm or the brewery.
1841 Sheffield directory entry - Truswell and Walker, ale and porter brewer, Eyre Street Brewery, 24 Eyre Street. Richard Truswell brewer.[2]
1844 John Walker, partner, died 4 Jun 1844.[3] Following death of partner, firm to continue as Richard Truswell and Co.[4]
1845 Sheffield directory entry - Richard Truswell and Co., brewers and maltsters, 39 Eyre Street and 21 Norfolk Lane.[5]
1847 Brewery was taken over by William Unwin, a solicitor, as a result of Richard Truswell becoming bankrupt from speculating in railway shares. Unwin continued the brewery as Truswell and Co.[6]
1852 Sheffield directory entry - Truswell and Co., (Wm Unwin), brewers and maltsters, 30 Eyre Street.[7]
1856 Sheffield directory entry - Truswell and Co., (Wm Unwin), ale and porter brewers, 30 Eyre Street.[8]
1862 Sheffield directory entry - Truswell and Co., (William Unwin), ale and porter brewers and maltsters, 30 Eyre Street. Malthouse, Effingham Street.[9]
1865 Truswell's Brewery Company Limited registered. Capital £150,000. To purchase the brewery of Truswell and Co., known as the Old Brewery in Eyre Street.[10] Although not evident at the time, William Unwin was in financial trouble. He had also taken over the Albion Ironworks from another bankrupt client in 1860. Soon after the brewery was sold Unwin was declared bankrupt; his court case attracted pages of newspaper coverage.[11]
1879 Sheffield directory entry - Truswell's Brewery Company Limited, brewers Norfolk Lane and Eyre Street, maltsters Effingham Street. Jas Grant manager.[12]
1955 An offer was made in November by Hope and Anchor Breweries Ltd to acquire the whole of the share capital of the company.[13]. The shareholders accepted the offer and Truswell's became a wholly owned subsidiary of Hope and Anchor.[14]
