John Guest
John Guest (1722 - 25th November 1787) was a brewer, farmer and coal merchant in Broseley, Shropshire.
Married Ann Willmore
1763(?) John Guest came to the attention of Thomas Lewis and the other Dowlais partners. He collaborated with Isaac Wilkinson in starting the Plymouth Ironworks.
1767 He moved from Broseley to Dowlais and was appointed manager of the works on 30 April 1767. He built his first house at Morlais Brook, Gellifaelog but, isolated from his family, became a "lonely and melancholy man". He discovered coal on Lewis's property and used it to replace charcoal for smelting.
By 1767, Guest had moved most of his family to Dowlais. His children were:
- Thomas Guest
- Sarah Guest who married William Taitt another of the Dowlais partners.
- John Guest (1750-1824), who married his second (?) cousin Penelope (1738/9-1795) on 13/10/1774 at Broseley (he was her 2nd husband). They had 3 daughters, the youngest of whom became the wife of John Onions, iron founder at Broseley[1].
