WILLIAM HENRY BAKER was born in 1858.

After being educated at a private school near Wolverhampton, he served an apprenticeship at Messrs. Wright and York's engineering works at Goscote, near Walsall, from 1871 to 1879.

In the latter year he went to India to superintend the erection and maintenance of the Jeypore Water Works in Rajputana.

In 1884 he became chief mechanical engineer on the Hooglily Jubilee Bridge, under Sir Bradford Leslie, and on its completion in 1888 he was appointed superintendent of works at the Residency Post Office, Gwalior, Central India; which position he held until his death on 29th January 1909, at the age of fifty.

He became a Member of this Institution in 1896.
