James Alexander Robertson (1872-1924)

1926 Obituary [1]

JAMES ALEXANDER ROBERTSON, O.B.E., was born at Fleetwood, Lancashire, on 1st March, 1872.

He gained his early education at the Fleetwood Testimonial School, and during his apprenticeship years, 1886 to 1893, which he spent in his father's works, his school training was supplemented by attendance at local technical classes.

After serving his time he continued in the same works, becoming in 1898 assistant-manager and a partner in the business, then known as Messrs. James Robertson and Sons (Fleetwood), Ltd. — marine engine work and motor wagons fitted with the Robertson boiler engaging his special attention.

Later on he became associated as a director with Messrs. James Marr and Son, Ltd., and thereafter relinquishing the engineering side he devoted himself particularly to the fishing industry, becoming associated with several other steam-trawler companies.

Mr. Robertson was a recognized authority on the scientific and economic aspects of the British sea fisheries, and his labours in connexion therewith were appreciated by the bestowal of an O.B.E.

His death occurred on 12th October 1924, following an operation for appendicitis.

He became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1906.
