WILLIAM ALFRED WOOD originally intended to follow a musical career and was an accomplished organist, but in 1873, at the age of 18, he entered the works of Messrs. Pollit and Wigzell of Sowerby Bridge.
Following two further years at the Elland works of Messrs. R. Dempster and Sons, he entered the employ of Messrs. Wheatley, Kirk, Price and Goulty, engineers, valuers, and auctioneers, of Manchester, as a draughtsman, surveyor, and machinery valuer.
Eventually he started a similar business of his own in partnership with Mr. W. A. Newland, specializing in milling engineering and the valuation of milling plant.
He carried on this business successfully until his death on 13th December 1928.
He became an Associate of the Institution in 1897 and a Companion in 1922.
