Sidney Richard Lowcock (1859-1929)

1929 Obituary [1]

SIDNEY RICHARD LOWCOCK was for very many years a prominent consulting engineer, specializing in sanitary engineering and water supply, on which he advised various Government departments, County Councils, Drainage and Water Boards, etc. He was largely concerned with parliamentary work throughout his career, and in recent years had been concerned with Bills of the Corporations of Manchester, Croydon, Chepping Wycombe, Grimsby, and Accrington, and with Bills for the extensions of the boroughs of Luton, Blackpool, Godalming, and Ormskirk.

At the time of his death, on 9th January 1929, he was engaged on the execution of water schemes for Chard and Lympstone and Saunton.

Mr. Lowcock was responsible for the remodelling of the water supply of Windsor Castle, and during the operations he discovered that some of the original mains, laid about the year 1670, were made of plate lead, 3/4-inch thick, bent into circular form and joined by burning in lead.

During the War he visited the United States on behalf of the Admiralty and subsequently was head of the Hydrogen Department of the Royal Air Force, with the rank of lieut.-colonel.

He was born in 1859, and became a Member of the Institution in 1909.

He was also a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
