Railway engineer/surveyor, of Newcastle-upon-Tyne

c.1811 Born Laxfield, County Durham

c.1838 William Wilson (1822-1898) became an apprentice of John Bourne; work was done surveying a line for George Stephenson

1851 Civil engineer, visitor in Covent Garden, London[1]

1861 Civil engineer, of Newcastle upon Tyne[2]

1871 Engineer, living in Newcastle upon Tyne with his wife Mary Ann and his sister[3]


This may be the same as (but might it be John Frederick Bourne):

1846 Resident engineer of several branch lines from the Leeds and Thirsk Railway, including one involving a junction near Melmerby to join the line of the Leeds and Hartlepool railway at Northallerton. Engineer in chief was Thomas Grainger[4]

1853 Engineer of railway line from Picton to Whitby[5]

1854 the engineer of the proposed Middlesbrough and Guisborough Railway branch line with junctions to the North Yorkshire and Cleveland railway at Battersby / Morton Grange[6]
