"WILFRED RILEY was born at Halifax, Yorks, in 1880, where he served his apprenticeship with Messrs. William Asquith, Ltd., machine tool makers, from 1896 to 1901, and concurrently attended the Municipal Technical College.
On the completion of his practical training in all departments he continued with Messrs. William Asquith for a further three years, taking control of a portion of the works and assisting the head of the firm. Short engagements then followed with the Wolseley Tool and Motor Car Co, as machine shop superintendent in charge of five departments, and with Messrs. Willans and Robinson, Ltd., of Rugby, for whom he was in control of the manufacture of small internal combustion parts.
On the conclusion of another brief appointment with Messrs. David Brown and Sons, of Huddersfield, where he was in charge of estimates, and also assistant to the managing directors, he went to Germany and was works manager at the Premier Works A.G. of Mr. Justus Christian Braun, Nuremberg, for two years.
In 1915 he accepted an appointment as joint managing director and works manager to the Monk Engineering Company, Ltd., specialists in expertmental work, jigs and tools, of Coventry, with whom he remained for twelve years. Subsequently he went into practice in the same city as a consulting engineer and manufacturer's agent, specializing in works organization. He continued in this work until his death, which occurred on 25th December 1948. Mr. Riley was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1914 and was transferred to Membership three years later."
