"EDWARD ERNEST JOLLY, who was born in 1895, was associated with electrical engineering during the whole of his professional career.
The war of 1914-18, however, prevented him from making a start in that industry until 1922. Shortly after leaving school and completing a year's training at the Marconi Telegraph College, London, he joined the Royal Flying Corps and served as a mechanic. Subsequently he received a commission and was in charge of workshops in Egypt. In addition he was responsible for the training of personnel. On demobilization in 1919, with the rank of captain, he studied at the University College, Southampton, and obtained a diploma in the electrical engineering course.
In 1922 he entered the service of the Southampton Corporation as a junior assistant engineer in the electricity department. Two years later he was appointed deputy distribution engineer at St. Helens, being subsequently promoted to the post of distribution engineer. He became deputy borough electrical engineer and manager to Ilford Corporation in 1932, and his final appointment, as borough electrical engineer and manager to the Corporation of Bethnal Green, took place in 1936. Mr. Jolly, whose death occurred on 17th October 1947, had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1934, and was also a Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers."
