"SIDNEY OWEN was engaged in technical education during most of his career and at the time of his death, which occurred on 22nd June 1945, had held the position of head of the engineering side at the Barnstaple Science, Art and Technical School for seventeen years. He was born in 1894 and served his apprenticeship with the Barry Graving Dock and Engineering Co, from 1910 to 1915, during which period he attended classes at the Barry and Cardiff Technical Schools. He became identified with technical education at an early age, and acted as part-time lecturer to classes at Barry from 1917, while filling engagements as draughtsman to the Llanelly Steel Company, Ltd., and as charge engineer on the layout of machine shops for Messrs. Elliott and Jeffery, of Barry. In 1919 he received an appointment as senior lecturer in mechanical engineering at West Hartlepool Technical School where he remained until he took up his final position at Barnstaple. Mr. Owen was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1915 and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1921."
