DANIEL WHITEHOUSE died at Newport on April 10, 1894, at the age of sixty-eight. He was the proprietor of the Abercarn and Macher Tinworks, and amassed a considerable fortune. Within the last two or three years, however, the works at both places suffered in consequence of the depression in the tinplate trade, and many of the hands were discharged, until at length the works were closed altogether.
Mr. Whitehouse was a self-made man, and was in early life employed in one of the establishments which afterwards became his own.
He was elected a member of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1881.
