George Hamer Scholes, who died on the 28th July, 1946, in his 73rd year, was Joint Managing Director of the Company bearing his name. Educated at the Manchester Grammar and Technical Schools, he was apprenticed with F. H. Royce and Co., Manchester. It is interesting to note that the certificate says he gained "a sound knowledge of continuous electric lighting, including the manufacture of dynamos, arc lamps, switches and details"—indication enough that he was an early entrant into the electrical world.
In 1897 he commenced business on his own account as an electrical contractor. His business progressed from house lighting in the days of carbon lamps, to the lighting of many private houses with the Sanco Electric Set, and finally to the complete electrical installation of many large works and factories. In 1924 he concentrated on the manufacture of electrical accessories.
The Wylex Works at Wythenshawe, built in 1934, was very near to his heart, and was considered by the Manchester Corporation as being typical of the best in light industry.
He joined The Institution as an Associate Member in 1900 and was elected a Member in 1933.
