Dr. Thomas Baker, head of the research department and chief metallurgist at the Steel, Peech, and Tozer works of the United Steel Companies, Ltd., died at Rotherham on May 28, 1938, at the age of 61.
Thomas Baker was educated at Wolsingham Grammar School, Armstrong College, Durham University, and Sheffield University. After carrying out research work at the last-named, he was appointed manager and metallurgist to New Vanadium and Alloys, Ltd., Llanelly.
He subsequently returned to Sheffield to join the staff of Messrs. Steel, Peech, and Tozer.
Although he was in ill-health for five years prior to his death, Dr. Baker was retained by the firm in an advisory capacity.
Dr. Baker was a Fellow of the Institute of Chemistry and of the Institute of Physics, and a member of the Iron and Steel Institute and of the Faraday Society. He was an original member of the Institute of Metals.
