M. Babinet ( -1872)

1872 Obituary [1]

M. Babinet, Member of the Institute, died on the 21st October.

He was known especially as an astronomer, but was celebrated for his numerous works and other branches of science. He wrote with great facility, and in a charming style; his popular scientific works are amongst the best in the language.

Occupying the position of examiner at the Polytechnic School for many years, he saw pass before him numerous generations of students, who retain the recollection of this old man, who, a little eccentric, commanded the respect and esteem of all.

With Delaunay and Babinet, the Polytechnic School have lost its most illustrious masters, and France two of its brilliant savants.
