Sydney Herbert Allard
Sydney Allard (1910-1966) A.M.I.Mech.E., M.I.M.I., sports car designer.
1910 Born in London[1], son of Arthur William Allard (who was in the slating trade) and Cecilia Daisy Allard[2]
Educated at St. Saviour's College, Ardingly.
1930 On leaving school he became a director of Adlards Motors, Ltd.. Putney
Took part in many races, first on motorcycles and then in cars.
1935 Created his first Allard Special, a Bugatti-tailed two-seater which won its first event at Taunton. Allard began to build replicas for sale[3]
1938 the Brixton Branch of the Adlard company was opened.
WWII Staffed, equipped and ran an Army Auxiliary Workshop under the Ministry of Supply at Fulham
1945 formed the Allard Motor Co. Ltd. as Managing Director
1949 won the R.A.C. Hill-Climb Championship
1950 finished third in the general classification at the 24 Heures du Mans
1952 Won the Monte-Carlo Rally, gaining world-wide acclaim
Also MD of Encon Motors, Ltd., Hilton Brothers (Coachworks) Ltd., and Adlards Motors. Ltd.
1963 Visited USA in order to learn more about the new sport of "drag-racing"
1964 Organised the first British Drag Racing Festival, inviting the top 10 American dragsters and their drivers. The Allard entry, driven by Alan, his son, put up a respectable performance, if not beating the Americans.
1966 Died in Surrey[4]
