Spent early childhood in North of England, family moving to London in 1915. Became junior clerk with firm of Tobacco Importers in the City in January, 1926. Left in June of that year to join present firm and became Salesman in 1927. During war A.I.D. Inspector with K. J. Motors Ltd., on production of Aircraft Components. Appointed Sales Manager, 1944. Became apprentice with Garty & Wade, Balham Hill in 1908. Served in 1914 war in France with 8th Division as Despatch Rider. Became Mechanist Staff Sergeant, 17th Battalion, Tank Corps. Was twice wounded; awarded Military Medal; presented to H.M. the late King George near Villers-Bretonneux in 1918. On signing of Armistice 17th Battalion were first British troops to enter Cologne. Studied engineering at Newcastle, Portsmouth and Birmingham Technical Colleges. Worked in junior positions with Deritend Stamping Co., Ltd., until made Manager, Hot Brass Pressing Department 1935-37. Left in 1937 joining William Smith Owen Co., Ltd., (Darlaston), first as junior Rate-fixer and finally as Joint Works Manager. Having been with 48th (S.M.) Divisional Signals T.A. since 1933 was embodied with unit in September, 1939. Became 145 Infantry Brigade Signals Officer, a position he held until capture by German army on May 3oth at Cassel. P.O.W. for 5 years in Germany. In December, 1945 rejoined Deritend as Works Director. Married Euginie (née Frost-Smith); three daughters. de NORMANVILLE, Edgar Joseph. Technical Director, Auto Transmissions, Ltd., Coventry. Born Leamington Spa, 13th October, 1882. Educated at Ampleforth College, York. Became apprenticed in 1897. As a boy evolved the idea of a fast rotating glass disc on a windscreen which would give clear vision by throwing off rain. Years afterwards the perfected article became universally adopted as the de Normanville Clear View Screen. Later produced the Normn Two Speed Gear for motor cycles. In 1908 joined "The Motor" becoming Technical Editor. Advocated the use of parachutes in that paper in 1910 but evoked only scornful criticism from experts. In 1912 pioneered the cause of Home Produced petrol again encountering virulent criticism. Wrote "How to Drive a Motor Car" while on "The Motor"—a still standard booklet. During 1914-18 war served with Royal Engineers and after the war became Motoring Editor of "The Daily Express" and later of "The Chronicle." Became associated with Humbers who adopted his de Normanville Safety Gear in 1935, as an optional extra.
