Served in 1914 war, in Egypt, Gallipoli and France (D.S.O., mentioned in Despatches). Was wounded. Became M.P. (U.) Hulme Division of Manchester, 1918-29 and 1931-45. NAPIER, Sir Joseph, BT., O.B.E. Director, Park Royal Vehicles, Ltd., London, N.W. 0. Born 1st August, 1895. Educated at Rugby; Jesus College, Cambridge. Served in 1914-18 war in South Wales Borderers (wounded three times in Gallipoli and Mesopotamia). Taken Prisoner-of-War by Turks in 1917. In 1939 became Lt.-Col. H.Q. Served in Army, 1914-18, mostly overseas (mentioned in Despatches). After release, joined Sturtwant Engineering Co. Ltd., rising to be Chief Accountant. NAYLON, William Herbert. District Manager, (Tyre Division) Manchester Area, 12, Ardwick Green South, Manchester, 13. Born Birmingham, 26th May, 1891. Educated at George Dixon School, Birmingham. Commenced work at age of 16 with E. G. Wrigley & Co. Ltd., Smethwick, as trainee. Studied Costing, Planning and Progress, Machine Shop procedure, etc. and finally took charge of Tool Section of Drawing Office. During 1914 war, reserved by Ministry of Munitions and engaged in design of tools and gauges for tanks. At cessation of hostilities appointed Technical Liaison Officer between Wrigley's and Alfred Herbert Ltd. Shortly after Morris Motors acquired Wrigley's, transferred to Dunlop's on the Service side, becoming successively Deputy District Manager, Eastern Counties; Deputy District Manager, Birmingham; Education Manager, Fort Dunlop and District Manager, Manchester. Studied engineering at City of Bradford Technical College and received practical experience in workshop methods at Centre Garage, Bradford in 191o. Between 1912 and 1940 worked successively as Draughtsman, Designer and Drawing Office Superintendent with Leyland Motors Ltd. Left in 1941 to take up present position. Ltd., Coachbuilders in 1923 and is still Governing Director of this concern. Converted Garage business into Limited Company in 1945. NEWALL, Albert Edward. Proprietor, Burscough Bridge Garage, Nr. Ormskirk. Born 14th November, 1895, Ashton-under-Lyne. Educated at Ashton-under-Lyne Technical School. Received technical training with Vickers Ltd., in Royal Flying Corps and in R.A.F. Was a pilot during first World War. On demobilisation, in 1919, became a partner in a Motor business at Ashton-under-Lyne. Bought present business in 1929. Member of Ormskirk U.D. Council, 1935; Chairman 1945. In 1939 appointed Transport Officer, Civil Defence and in 1941 helped to form local Air Training Squadron holding position of C.O. for four years. NEWSOME, Samuel Herbert, J.P.,M.I.M.I. Chairman and Managing Director, S. H. Newsome & Co. Ltd., Coventry. Born Coventry, 9th June, 1901. Educated at Oundle School. Served apprenticeship with Calthorpe Motor Co. Founded present firm in 1923, building 1 litre Warwick racing car for 200 mile race. Subsequently drove in many International races including Ulster T.T. and Le Mans 24 hour race as member of official Lea-Francis, Riley and Aston Martin teams. Competed at Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb for 25 years winning many awards. Entered theatrical business in 193o. Appointed Managing Director of Coventry Hippodrome, Co Ltd., 1931. NEWTON, Noel Banner. Chairman and Managing Director, Newton & Bennett, Ltd., Acton. Born Sale, 22nd February, 1902. Educated at Oundle; Manchester University. Studied at College of Technology, Manchester. Served apprenticeship with Metropolitan Vickers, Manchester and a further term with Soc. Ceirano, Torino in which Mr. Newton, Senior was interested. Established Drawing Office and Workshop in Italy where the 1,100 c.c. Newton Car was designed and prototypes prepared. These prototypes were exhibited at Olympia in the following year and also entered in the 200 miles race. Returned later to England acting as sole British Concessionnaires for the Ceirano car. In 1926 manufactured the original telescopic shock absorber known as the Newton Shock Absorber. Many fighting vehicles were equipped with this type of suspension control and two further factories manufactured the apparatus. Another Company—Newton (Motor) Products Ltd., was formed in 1945 to manufacture the Newton Clutch Plate, and in 1946 Power Jacks Ltd., was founded to make various hydraulic apparatus including the Newton " Hydratruck." NICHOLL, John Storer. Chief Officer, Research and Charges, Road Haulage Executive, 222, Marylebone Road, N.W.I. Born London 1888. Educated at Sutton Valence School. Joined Union Castle Line, 1904, leaving them in 1910 to join staff of Chief Engineer, Hudson Bay & Pacific Rly., in Canada. Later qualified as Chartered Accountant and from 1915 practised in Saskatchewan and Alberta. During 1st World War served on Imperial Munitions Board, Ottawa, eventually becoming Deputy Auditor and Controller. In 192o joined a firm of London Chartered Accountants who acted as commercial Managers of McNamara & Co Ltd., Royal Mail and Road Transport Contractors. Was a partner of that firm and Vice-Chairman and Chief executive officer when it was acquired by B.T.C. in 1948. President of Institute of Transport, 1941/43. Vice-President of Commercial Motor Users Association. Member of Transport Advisory Council from its inception in 1934 until its dissolution. NICHOLL, Robert Iltyd. Director, Fox and Nicholl Ltd., Surbiton. Born Bridgend, 29th December, 1896. Educated at Eton, and Christ Church, Oxford. Served apprenticeship with Wolseley Motors Ltd., in 1920. On the acquisition of the Wolseley Co. by Morris Motors, formed partnership with A. W. Fox, Manager at the Wolseley Repair Works. Built first Filling station on the Kingston by-Pass Road. From 1929 they became interested in Motor Racing and took part as entrants and Managers in numerous races in Britain and on the Continent, winning many racing Trophies. In 1937 enlarged the firm's premises to undertake Sheet Metal work. During the war undertook rearmament programme. In 1951 sold part of premises, used during the war. Retained Showrooms, Workshops, and Filling Station. Upon the death of father in 1935 gave up active participation in the running of Firm, but is still Director. Interests : Landowner and Farmer. NICHOLS, Charles William. Director, S. Smith & Son (England) Ltd., Cricklewood. Born Ipswich, 1884. Educated at St. Matthew School. Joined S. Smith & Son in 1901, before the speedometer was invented, working in first place as a stock-keeper. Grew up with the firm and when it became a public company in 1914 was elected to the Board. Commissioned 1915, mentioned in Despatches, 1917. Awarded Military Cross, 1917 and promoted to rank of Captain. Joined Oil Industry with National Fuel Oil Co. In 1904 joined the Daimler Co. in Test Dept. moving to similar Dept. in Wolseley's in 1906. In 1907 joined The Thames Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. Ltd., Greenwich as Technical Engineer. Later took position in Works Dept. of E. W. Jackson & Son Ltd., Doncaster. Joined Glendower Motor Co. Ltd. of Kensington in 1910, leaving them in 1912 to become Carburettor Engineer with S. Wolf & Co. Ltd. Joined the Capac Co. on its formation in 1918 and in 1924 became Technical Manager at Beverley Works Ltd., Barnes. Returned to Capac in 1935 as Managing Director. Responsible for design and introduction of the Bin. Aural Tectoscope for testing the running condition of plant and machinery; of the Bin. NUFFIELD, Viscount, G.B.E. Chairman, Morris Motors Ltd., Cowley. Born (William Richard Morris) loth October, 1877. Educated at Cowley. Commenced career at age of 16 with a capital of less than £5, manufacturing and racing cycles. Built and sold his first motor-cycle in the early years of the century. Rented Hurst Grammar School Buildings at Cowley (where his father had been educated) and there designed, in 1910 prototypes of the first Morris Oxford Cars. These were calculated to compete with the low priced vehicles from America and on reaching production stage in 1912 had this effect. Their original price was k165 and though only 400 were made prior to the outbreak of war, Morris afterwards became the first British Manufacturer to develop Mass Production of light and inexpensive cars. During 1921 and 1922 he cut his prices sensationally in several stages from £465 to £225 and eventually produced a Ioo car— the Morris Minor—in 1930. Received Baronetcy in 1929. Was Governor or Vice-President of many Hospitals before they were taken over by the State, and made exceptionally generous donations to these. Arrangements were being made, early 1952, to finalise an amalgamation between the Nuffield Organisation (q.v. in firms' section) and the Austin Motor Co. Ltd. Is Hon.
