'Fire Queen' built by A. Horlock and Co in 1848, and preserved at Penrhyn Castle Railway Museum
A. Horlock & Co of Northfleet Ironworks, Kent
1848 Built two locomotives for the 4ft gauge Dinorwic Slate Quarries. [1]. One of these, 'Fire Queen', has survived into preservation (see photo). The design is unusual, but the workmanship is excellent.
Alfred Horlock started up the Northfleet Ironworks in 1847, when he was only 25, taking over a new factory from Poynder & Medlicott (Medlicott being his uncle). He became bankrupt in 1853. His factory was sold to Bell, Wells & Co, shipbuilders. He was later employed at Fletcher’s shipyard in Gravesend, and died in 1866. [2]
