"Caldow.—On November 22, at Verbena Cottage, Presto wick,’ Mr. Adam Caldow, plumber and gasfitter, late 'of Kilmarnock, aged seventy-six. He, was a native of Kilwinning, and, having served his apprenticeship there with the late Mr. John Gemmell, tinsmith and gas-fitter, he went to Kilmarnock, where he was in business with the late Mr. Bisset, and later in St. Marnock Street with the late Mr. Forsyth. Afterwards he entered into partnership with the late Bailie James Burnett, and ultimately started on his own account in premises at Braefoot, retiring, from commercial life about a year ago. For many years he specialised, in lamps—signal lamps, street lamps, decorative lamps, and miners’ lamps—and in connection with these he introduced many new features. He supplied lamps to public bodies and private firms all over the country, and for a long time he sent thousands of miners’ lamps annually, to South Africa."
