Albert Ottewell (1861-1909) of John Smith and Co
1861 May 7th. c1856 Born at Derby the son of Draper Ottewell, a Brass Founder, and his wife Mary. Brother of Alfred Draper Ottewell
1871 Living at 21 Siddall Road, Derby: Draper Ottewell (age 40 born Marleyshire, Derby), Brass Founder Foreman. With his wife Mary Ottewell (age 37 born Mddx.) and their children Alfred D. Ottewell (age 15 born Derby), a Draughtsman; Henry Ottewell (age 12 born Derby); Albert Ottewell (age 9 born Derby); and Ada Mary Ottewell (age 5 born Derby). One boarder and one servant[1]

ALBERT OTTEWELL was born at Derby on 7th May 1861, and was educated at the British School in his native town.
He served his apprenticeship from 1876 to 1883 in the brass foundry and engineering works of Messrs. John Smith and Co., of Derby, and on its completion he became assistant manager.
This position he held until 1893, when he was admitted to a partnership, and four years later, on the retirement of Sir John Smith, (founder of the firm), the business was taken over by Mr. Ottowell's father.
Upon the death of the latter, the entire control and proprietorship became vested in two of his sons - Albert and Alfred D. Ottewell. The latter retired in 1897, leaving Albert Ottewell sole proprietor.
He took a great interest in municipal affairs, being elected a councillor in 1894, and two years later he became chairman of the Baths Committee.
His death took place at his residence in Derby on 28th May 1909, at the age of forty-eight.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1899.
